On Friday, 25 September 2026, ICON Data and Learning Labs in partnership with Amnesty International Kenya and DPO 360 Africa launched The Data Protection Manual For Non-Profits In Kenya, a practical resource designed to help organisations translate the Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019 into everyday practice.
The manual responds to a gap identified through the past 4 years of implementing our award-winning Ijue Data Yako (Know Your Data) Initiative, a data protection training and support targeting non-profits in the lake region of Kenya.
Developed over nine months, the manual brings practical guidance to questions organisations face every day, from obtaining consent and collecting personal information to managing access, storage and sharing of data, including across borders.
Importantly, the manual extends the value of the Ijue Data Yako sessions beyond the training room. It not only provides organisations with a key resource to safeguard community data but also supports self-paced learning, helping staff revisit key concepts, and providing guidance when data protection questions arise in their day-to-day work.
During the launch, Senior Deputy Data Commissioner, Oscar Otieno from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) reiterated the importance of strengthening data protection practices among non-profits handling personal and sensitive information. His remarks reinforced the relevance of the manual as a practical resource for organisations seeking to strengthen their understanding and application of data protection in their everyday operations.
The launch was also graced by Dr Mugambi Laibuta, President of the DPGSK, Victor Ndede, Head of Programmes at Amnesty International Kenya among others. Previous graduates of the Ijue Data Yako Initiative also shared on the timeliness of this manual in further supporting their organizations to develop data protection policies and strengthen their understanding of the Data Protection Act.
